The word toxic comes from the Greek word toxin, which refers to a poison placed to an arrow's point. We are all wounded beings who, without conscious intervention.
This is why we often find ourselves in toxic relationships or behavior patterns; there's an addictive aspect to them that makes us feel good even as it breaks us down. The first step ahead, as with anything, is to become aware. With this in mind, I've compiled a list of each zodiac's harmful characteristics. "The stars influence us, but they do not bind us," ancient astrologers said.
We are inclined to a certain level of toxicity, but we are not condemned to perpetuate it this way. May we be able to recognize it, learn from it, and move away from it with purpose.
CANCER June 21 – July 22
Toxic trait: Disregard for personal boundaries is blatant
Cancer is associated with the divine feminine and is controlled by the moon. It represents the mother archetype, portrayed as nourishing and support at its best. It acts like the worst type of matriarch, who gets drunk at your birthday party, reads your diary, and wants to sleep with your boyfriend because she sees you as nothing more than an extension of herself. Cancer has difficulty maintaining its limits and frequently fails to respect the boundaries of others, as evidenced by their constantly disruptive behavior. Permission should be sought. You have no right to anyone's completeness or interiority.
LEO July 23 – August 22
Toxic trait: Overdramatic
As Leo is controlled by the sun, they are skilled at commanding attention and shining an intense light on causes and conditions that are important to them. They can be powerful advocates or obnoxious show-offs. As yourself, 'how can I use my platform and position to help others instead of just confirming my worth.'
VIRGO August 23 – September 22
Toxic trait: Judgmental
Virgos are keen observers who can't help but notice and note everything and everyone. This is great for touching up crown molding or detailing your automobile, but not so much for attempting to build a relationship. Virgo is usually merely wanting to help with their observations and ideas for change, but hell hath no fury like a poisonous Virgo about to explode. Without speaking, observe.
LIBRA September 23 – October 22
Toxic trait: Repression and high expectations leading to outbursts
Libras, represented by scales and balances, are always looking for harmony, or at least its appearance. That is, in fact, exhausting. Libras are quick to love someone and never fail to enchant, but they typically suppress their darker thoughts to maintain their relationships. This, of course, backfires when everything buried is eventually excavated. The only thing separating a quarrel from a crisis is how you respond to it.
SCORPIO October 23 – November 21
Toxic trait: Taking use of other people's talents and weaknesses
A Scorpio is the only sign that truly comprehends power dynamics. They make superb managers, promoters, pimps, and psychologists since they prefer to work behind the scenes. Toxicity develops when they utilize their power for dubious and wholly self-serving purposes. Only focus on self-control.
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21
Toxic trait: Rudeness
Sagittarians are seekers whose idealistic nature leads them to intellectual adventures and concerns. Idealists with a unique moral code regard kindness as an idea rather than behavior and act as a social construct. They are prone to blunt delivery and off-color commentary due to this. To own up to a mistake.
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 19
Toxic trait: Ruthlessness/Hard-hearted
Capricorns are strategic thinkers who can easily spot opportunities and flaws in others. The greatest among them use this knowledge sparingly, gaining an advantage while being careful not to trample others on their climb to the top. The worst form of goat climbs to the top and uses their power to punish and exploit others. Choose kindness frequently and consistently.
AQUARIUS January 20 – February 18
Toxic trait: Deceitfulness/Two-facedness
Aquarians, ruled by the structured planet Saturn and the chaotic planet Uranus, are torn between order and chaos. This conflict makes them excellent cult leaders and dubious politicians. Aquarians, like air signs, are emotionally detached and prone to constructing public personas that conceal their inner selves. Because of this chasm, it isn't easy to honestly know or comprehend an Aquarius' objectives. That makes them enigmatic at best and deceptive at worst. For people who are strangers to themselves, a mask is a crutch.
PISCES February 19 – March 20
Toxic trait: Escapism/Imaginative to escape from reality
The toxicity of the fish people is two-fold. As Neptune rules them, the planet of dreams and delusions, their version of reality is unstable at best and diluted at worst. At heart, we're all escape artists. Pisceans run away from anything they can't stand or don't want to be responsible for. Only the ghosts that you refuse to confront can haunt you.
ARIES March 21 – April 19
Toxic trait: Impulse control issues
The same qualities that make Aries enjoyable to be around may also make them a cause of anxiety for others, or worse, a full-fledged emotional terrorist. Of course, they're typically attractive, and while they have regular flare-ups, they don't usually endure long. Exercising your willpower without dominating or threatening others is a good idea.
TAURUS April 20 – May 20
Toxic trait: Selfishness
Taurus rules the second house of values and possessions. These people can be materialistic, oblivious to others' needs, and selfish regarding resources and romance when they are at their lowest vibration. They have an instinctive fear of scarcity, which drives them to hoard and defend their luxury objects, financial holdings, and their partner's affections. A Taurus with low vibration is focused on obtaining and maintaining and lives in fear of losing what they have.
GEMINI May 21 – June 20
Toxic trait: No filter
Mercury, the planet of communication, rules Gemini, and these individuals' thoughts are constantly buzzing with knowledge, idle chatter, pop-cultural trivia, conspiracy theories, and insults. Problems come when people refuse to fact-check or self-edit, preferring to weaponize their words and spew a barrage of fiery falsehoods, accusations, and unasked-for opinions.
